While all other versions of the Golf have been removed from Volkswagen’s North American lineup, the high-performance GTI and R models are still going strong and returning for 2025, much to the delight of their fans.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R receive a minor refresh for 2025, with small but welcome updates. However, the German automaker has made the decision to eliminate the manual transmission from the lineup this year. Needless to say, this move has been met with strong criticism since the official announcement. That being said, we should consider ourselves lucky that the Golf GTI and Golf R are still available at all.
Unsurprisingly, the price tag for these two sporty compacts has increased slightly this year. The Golf GTI now starts at $36,495, up from $34,795. Adding in destination and preparation fees brings the total to $38,545. With a few available options, the price can easily exceed $40,000. For instance, a sunroof is available for $1,250, while 19-inch Queenstown wheels, performance tires, and ArtVelour seats can be added for $500 each, which is quite reasonable for a car of this caliber. Meanwhile, the Autobahn trim starts at $40,495.
Aside from the removal of the manual transmission, the mechanical specifications remain unchanged for the 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI. The German hot hatch is still powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, delivering 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.
As for the Golf R, it officially surpasses the $50,000 mark before adding destination fees or any optional extras. The starting price now sits at $53,595. Once again, a few options are available, but the Black Edition R is expected to be the standout choice this year.
Like the GTI, the Golf R is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. However, this version produces 328 horsepower and features all-wheel drive, giving it a completely different driving experience compared to its front-wheel-drive GTI sibling.
